In Shakespeare awoke and found himself famous. Lines from his comic, erotic, tragic poem Venus and Adonis were on everyone's appearance in of the darkly reflective and richly descriptive Rape of Lucrece confirmed his fame as 'Sweet Master Shakespeare', Elizabethan England's most brilliant non-dramatic poet/5(). I read this book before for a graduate Shakespeare Class but we only ever read Venus and Adonis. This time around I really really wanted to read all of the sonnets. Shakespeare is beautiful, that's the only real reason the reader needs to actually pick up this book. Shakespeare, his life and love and passion, lives on in these poems/5.

'Venus and Adonis' and 'The Rape of Lucrece' (Unabridged) audiobook, by William Shakespeare These two great poems date from Shakespeare's early years and are full of passion and invention. In Venus and Adonis, the goddess of love pleads with the beautiful boy to submit to her advances and become her love - but he only wants to hunt boar. Each was very popular during Shakespeare's lifetime and remained in print for half a century afterwards. "Venus and Adonis" was first published in and went through seventeen editions by while "The Rape of Lucrece," first published in , went through nine editions by All of these early editions, however, are exceedingly rare.

Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece are dedicated, or to William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, to whom the First Folio is dedicated. Many have thought that Henry Wriothesley, might be the youth addressed in the sonnets, especially as he is also known to have been reluctant to marry (at 26 in ), and to have turned down several proposed.

The combination of Venus and Adonis with the Rape of Lucrece is an odd combination. Venus’s unrequited love of the beautiful Adonis could be the story of any woman in love with an immature man who wants to go hunting instead of staying with her/5.

In Venus and Adonis, the goddess of love pleads with the beautiful boy to submit to her advances and become her love - but he only wants to hunt boar. In the more serious Rape of Lucrece, Shakespeare draws on the Roman tale of the Emperor Tarquin’s desire for Lucrece and its tragic consequencies.

These poems give prominent parts to the two heroines, and Clare Corbett and Eve Best shine.5/5(1). Venus and Adonis / The Rape of Lucrece Hardcover – January 1, by shakespeare (Author) out of 5 stars 1 rating.
